ABOUT

Commissioned for the St. Olav Festival in 2016, THE SONG OF THE SEA is a moving excerpt from the major work "The Wound in the Water." Premiered by soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, the piece explores themes of environmental and spiritual disconnection.

Within the broader narrative of "The Wound in the Water," which addresses humanity's estrangement from nature and each other due to greed, The Song of the Sea stands out for its poignant storytelling, echoing the broader theme of our troubled relationship with the natural world and each other.

The lyrics tell the story of a woman whose lifelong connection with the sea undergoes a painful transformation. The sea, once a source of joy and familiarity, now reveals signs of deep distress, symbolizing the wider wounding of our world.

I aimed to create a piece that not only conveys the beauty of the ocean but also encourages reflection on our collective responsibility in healing our relationship with the planet.
